Calamine is formed with a combination of zinc-oxide and 0.5%
ferric-oxide, the lotion is formed by additional ingredients like phenol,
kaolin clay, glycerine and calcium hydroxide. Zinc-oxide has astringent
properties and ferric-oxide has anti-pruritic properties, together they
eliminate a lot of skin problems externally. Keep reading to know more about
the benefits.
Zinc-oxide helps in healing epidermal wounds, burns,
rashes, infections and acne, it also prevents from UV-A and UV-B rays and is
often used as a natural, non-toxic sunscreen.
Ferric-oxide, also known as iron-oxide, it’s a
compound of iron and oxygen used in various skin and cosmetic products as they
are non-toxic, non-bleeding and moisture resistant make them a great addition
for all the skincare products.
Kaolin is another major ingredient, it’s a clay
originally from the “Kaoling” hill from China. This clay was mostly used to
make porcelain and also as a medicine for treating diarrhoea in China. The
natural white mineral goes beyond pottery as it has great absorbency and
soothing properties. It does a great job for combination and sensitive skin types and
will seriously aid in clearing pores and soaking up the excess moisture without
causing flakiness or overly dry patches.
The exact mechanism of how zinc-oxide and ferric-oxide is that
they have skin protecting and astringent properties that relieve itching. They
also seem to slow down the bacterial growth, preventing the infections from
worsening.
